What to expect

The first step, made easier.

Taking the first step towards therapy can feel overwhelming when you are unsure what comes next. This guide walks you through the process, from your first contact to your first session, so nothing feels unexpected.

When you make contact

Reaching out for support can feel like a big step, but the first contact is simple. You can book online, send a message or give us a call. If we are with a client, your call will go to voicemail. This is completely normal. Leave your name and contact details, and we will return your call within one business day.

You will be asked a few brief questions about what has brought you to therapy. You do not need to have the right words or explain everything straight away; a brief overview is enough. From there, we can explore the next steps and find an appointment time that works for you.

If we feel another service or practitioner may better support your needs, we will let you know and help guide you in the right direction. Reaching out is the first step, and we are here to make that process as comfortable as possible.

The first session

The first session is a chance to begin understanding your story, your experiences and what has brought you to therapy. We will explore what you would like support with, what you hope to work towards and answer any questions you may have about the therapeutic process.

You can bring notes if that helps, or simply arrive as you are. There is no expectation to share everything straight away, and you will never be pushed to discuss anything before you feel ready.

Your initial appointment is 80 minutes, allowing time to understand the bigger picture rather than rushing through your experiences. Ongoing sessions are 50 minutes. The frequency of appointments varies depending on your needs, with weekly or fortnightly sessions often used at the beginning and adjusted over time as your goals and circumstances change.

The space itself

It helps to be able to picture where you're going. The clinic is within the Earlyview 3D/4D Ultrasound Centre at Shop 14, 140 The Grand Parade, Monterey, directly opposite Brighton-Le-Sands Beach. There's a comfortable waiting area, and the therapeutic space is a warm and calming environment thoughtfully designed with soft tones, comfortable furnishings and a peaceful atmosphere. The location page covers parking, transport and exactly what to do when you arrive.

Your privacy & confidentiality

What you share in therapy is treated with respect and kept confidential. Psychologists are bound by strict privacy and confidentiality requirements, and information from your sessions is not shared with your GP, family members or others without your consent.

There are a small number of situations where confidentiality may need to be limited, including if there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or another person, concerns about the safety of a child or vulnerable person, where information is required by law or in response to a court order.

Where possible, these situations will be discussed with you beforehand, and you will be supported through the process. Confidentiality and privacy will also be explained during your first appointment, and you are welcome to ask questions at any stage.

If it isn't the right fit

The relationship between you and your psychologist is an important part of therapy, and finding the right fit matters. Sometimes the connection may not feel right, and that is a normal part of the process.

If after a session or two you feel that another approach or psychologist may suit you better, you are welcome to share this or simply let us know. There is no judgement, and we can help guide you towards finding the right support for your needs.

What matters most is that you feel comfortable, understood and supported in your therapeutic journey.

Ready when you are

That's the whole process. No hidden steps. If a question remains, ask it. If not, the first step is one short message or a booked time.
