FAQ
The questions people actually ask.
If yours isn't here, it's still worth asking. No question about starting therapy is too small or too obvious.
Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
No. You can contact me and book directly, without any GP visit, referral or diagnosis. A referral with a Mental Health Treatment Plan is only needed if you want the Medicare rebate. The fees page explains that pathway step by step.
I've never done therapy before. What if I don't know what to say?
That's more common than you'd think. Making it easy is my job, and arriving prepared isn't yours. Most first sessions begin with something as simple as "things have been hard lately", and we go from there.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes. Sessions are confidential, with only the narrow legal exceptions that apply to every psychologist in Australia: a serious and immediate risk of harm, a court subpoena, or where the law requires it. These are explained plainly on the What to Expect page, and again in person at your first session.
Will you tell my GP what we talk about?
Not without your consent. If you're using a Medicare referral I'm required to send your GP brief progress correspondence, but it's high-level and I'm happy to show you what it says. Beyond that, nothing is shared unless you ask me to.
How do I know if therapy is working?
We check, together and out loud. Early on we'll get clear about what "better" would look like for you, and revisit it as we go. Progress in therapy is rarely a straight line, but you should be able to feel the direction. And if you can't, that's exactly the conversation to have with me.
What if we don't click?
Then we say so, kindly. Either of us can raise it. Fit matters more than anything else in therapy, and not clicking is nobody's failure. If you'd like, I'll help you find someone better suited. You will not offend me.
Do you offer telehealth?
Yes, for new and existing clients. Sessions run by secure video call if distance, health or logistics make coming in hard. Some people simply prefer it. The fee and rebate are the same as in-person sessions.
How do I pay?
Payment is taken on the day, by EFTPOS or bank transfer. If you have a Medicare referral, the rebate is processed immediately after your appointment for eligible clients, so the money comes back to you fast. Full details are on the fees page.
Can I bring someone with me?
Of course. A partner, friend or family member is welcome to sit in the waiting area, or to join the start of a session if that helps you feel at ease. The appointment stays yours, and they join only as much as you want.
What if I need to cancel?
Let us know as soon as you can and we'll rearrange. With more than 24 hours' notice there's no cancellation fee. With less than 24 hours' notice, or if the appointment isn't attended, a 50% cancellation fee applies, because a held appointment can't be offered to someone else. The full policy is on the fees page.
